Gratuities are not included. Many participants choose to tip their guides and expedition staff for exceptional service. If you’re wondering about the appropriate amount, a common range is 10% for a 7 day expedition. Tips should be given to the lead guide who will share the gratuity with auxiliary staff that are directly related to the trip, captains, drivers, etc. We kindly request cash only as checks and credit cards create complications and taxes.

A QUICK FACTS ABOUT BAJA

Wildlife Viewing Etiquette

The highlight of our trips is the wildlife we may encounter during marine safaris, snorkeling, hiking, birding, or camping. Our guides and captains are local experts, well-versed in the areas we explore and the habits of the local wildlife. They frequently communicate with other boats, fisherman, and researchers to improve our chances of spotting wildlife. However, please keep in mind that wildlife is unpredictable, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

When we do encounter wildlife, it’s crucial to follow certain guidelines to ensure we do not disrupt their natural behaviors. The main goal is to observe without disturbing them. Remember you are traveling with a truly local company, our guides and captains will direct you to stay close together and position the group to minimize any impact on the wildlife. At your pre-trip meeting, your guides will go over our respectful wildlife viewing practices, emphasizing the importance of minimizing our impact on the animals and their environment.

Snorkeling Considerations

IMG_6460

Baja California Sur is well known for the tranquility and color of its waters, making it a top snorkeling destination year round. However, it’s important to note that all our guests must have previous snorkeling experience. In the winter there are usually “northerlies” and can sometimes blow for three days at a time, though more commonly they are limited to being strong afternoon breezes; this is why it’s essential to ensure you can swim confidently in open water, even in windy, current, and swell conditions. This ensures not only your safety but also the enjoyment of the activities.

Cerralvo Island features deep fjord-like bays that offer protection from these winds, though there may be days when boat outings are not possible. Our experienced guides prioritize your safety and will always provide alternative activities such as hiking, bird watching, or snorkeling in protected bays. At Baja Barefoot, safety is our top priority.

Common Natural Hazards

While embarking on your outdoor expedition, it's important to be aware of potential natural hazards.
  • Dehydration and sunburn: continually drink small sips of water to keep you hydrated and use sunscreen.
  • Stingrays: do the Baja Shuffle! Shuffle your feet in shallow waters and wear footwear;
if stung, soak the wound in hot water or vinegar.
  • Jellyfish: usually in warm waters; if stung, avoid scratching and apply vinager.
  • Pufferfish: watch out for washed-up pufferfish on the shore, as they can cause injuries.
  • Stonefish and fireworms: though rare, are dangerous, so avoid standing on rocky areas or touching anything while snorkeling.
  • Rattlesnakes and scorpions: while hiking and keep your tent zipped to prevent unwelcome visitors, dont forget to shake your any object you leave out of your tent.

Understanding and preparing for these risks will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect yourself from:

  • MONEY MATTERS

Baja Barefoot recommends bringing enough cash in local currency or available credit/debit funds. Consider your spending habits for alcohol drinks, additional meals, shopping, etc., and ensure access to emergency funds.

Mexico’s official currency is the Peso. Currency exchange counters, marked “Exchange,” are typically found at international airports. You will need your passport to exchange money, and the exchange rate will be shown as “buy” or “purchase,” indicating the amount of pesos per dollar.

  • DISCONNECT TO CONNECT:
